Have you ever had the thought of tuning yourself in to take bigger steps during your run would lead you to faster pace and better performance? If that’s the case, you might have to think twice about it.

When i first begin running, i was having similar mindsets. Therefore, i went to the track atleast twice a week, trying to push myself off the ground harder everytime to achieve the biggest steps possible. It feels good to be able to boost my speed up in such a short period of time. Cool right?

Well, consequences always comes after taking short cuts. Majority of your lower limb joint moments will increase when overstriding, hence, leading to more muscle injuries. Reason behind is that your muscle groups needs to build up the capacity to withstand the external forces.

However, there are circumstances that taking bigger steps is inevitable. For example, when running uphill, you need more forces to push off the ground. When running on hills, you need to climb the steps along the trail.

My suggestion to you is, for day to day training, there should be some legs strength exercise to be included. Try to hit the gym for once or twice a week. It helps to build up the endurance of your legs/hip group muscles.

During day to day training, try to take a more frequent steps approach and keep the same stride length if you want to achieve a faster pace.
